Occult Academy 11 – cat fight

September 14, 2010

Maya and Chihiro confront each other.

Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin (Occult Academy) episode 11 dares to go places you wouldn’t have guessed. As this series moves towards its conclusion, passions, bubbling below the surface, erupt, Fumiaki is seduced, beaten, and abandoned, Maya is killed, and a white witch emerges.

By the power of Gainax!

Fumiaki’s girlfriend surprises him in more ways than one. First by showing up in his apartment to make him a special plate of banana-cola flavored curry, then by jumping his bones in the middle of a satanic coven. PSgels seems to think that Mikaze has used magic on Fumiaki:

Mikaze’s sex appeal went beyond the roof here (and it was actually used extremely well in the first half of this episode), the inner paranoia of her spells on Bunmei were wonderfully portrayed

That seems plausible, as Maya didn’t really deserve his mistrust. Fumiaki, if, in the future, some girl makes out with you in the middle of a bunch of people dressed in black robes and hoods, and she tells you some other girl is a witch who must die, and the proof is a crystal ball … don’t believe her.

Mikaze "casts a spell" on Fumiaki.

The whole section with Mikaze was turned up to 11. I probably exclaimed “WTF?” six or seven times. And this was after having previously speculated that Mikaze was some non-human creature.

Maya's dead. Get over it.

We saw this shot in the preview last week, and the episode title is “Maya’s Death”. ‘Nuff said.

Release!

We also got an amusing transformation sequence, as Mikaze’s true nature is revealed. By this time the twists and turns were coming fast, so I’ll just make one more comment.

Go go Chihiro!

Just when everything looks utterly bleak, Chihiro Kawashima, vice-president of Waldstein Academy, steps in and reveals her awesome secret identity as the White Mage. I hope she finally gets a chance to kick Mikaze’s ass.

Chaps over at Chocolate Syrupy Waffles has the right idea, I too, will now rename all of my White Mages after Chihiro.

This was my favorite episode by far, and it made up for all the meandering in the middle portions of the show. The animation direction in particular was quite impressive. And Minori Chihara vs. Yuu Kobayashi next week should be amusing.

I don’t know why they didn’t stick to a tighter story-line. This show had some excellent moments (this episode wasn’t the only impressive one they delivered), but there was too much rambling. They rarely conveyed the urgency of an impending global crisis.

This was definitely one of my favorite episodes and whoa to all the action. About time too! I can’t wait for the cat fight to continue! xD

I would have to agree on a spell too because she’s a witch after all. I just hope that a person doesn’t turn out to be the Key unless it’s Mikaze. I have my suspicion over Smile or Kozue being contenders too. Anyway, we’ll see.

Yeah, just two more episodes, so we’ll be seeing fairly soon.

I’ll wait until it’s all over, including the 4 (!) specials you mention on the epic Metanorn Fall 2010 Preview, but at some point I would like to go back over everything and see just how much real content there was (as opposed to fillerish side stories.

I knew you’d be happy with the Chiriho reveal 🙂

Well this was a fun episode, I was starting to think that Mikaze was just a red herring since it was too obvious that there was more to her. But to think that she was the main antagonist aside from pulling Fumiaki away when he was needed, and even the one who killed Maya’s father. So in a way I was kind of surprised by it and I’ll agree that what happened with her when they were surrounded by the cult members was really weird.

Chihiro’s reveal was quite the opposite really as it wouldn’t have been hard to believe that Maya’s father would have someone like her as the vice-principal. So I’ll looking forward to seeing her battle with Mikaze as well.
