Fall 2012 ~ Shoujo Kisses

October 8, 2012

This post discusses kisses as they appear in three shoujo series airing Fall 2012.

The Fall 2012 anime season brings us an unusually high number of shoujo romance series. Typically there is at most one shoujo title (excluding mahou shoujo titles, which are aimed at a younger viewer). But this time around we have three titles, and this gives us an opportunity we never had before to compare and contrast currently airing shoujo titles. (The three shoujo series this season are: Kamisama Hajimemashita, Suki-tte Ii na yo, and Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun the titles have been presented in English as Kamisama Kiss, Say ‘I love you’, and My Little Monster, respectively).

Spoiler Alert: Although this post only looks at the first episodes of each of these three titles, I’ll be discussing the episodes as if you had already seen the first episodes of every one of these titles. If you want to get the full impact of seeing the shows for yourself, watch them before reading the discussion that follows.

Inu X Boku SS (The Dog and Me — Secret Service) is an oddity. The core story is great. It has some funny and cute moments scattered throughout. It suffers a bit from genre derangement syndrome (I’ll get back to that in a bit), but I do want to stress that I enjoyed watching it, and I think there are many people who would find that it is surprisingly effective as a love story.

While the post that follows really isn’t spoilery, I focus on my reaction to the series as a whole. Those looking for more of a description of what the series is about would be better served by the taste test I wrote based upon watching the first three episodes.

Paradise Kiss

August 29, 2010

A picnic Fellini could have been proud of.

Paradise Kiss is the story of Yukari, a high school girl who falls in with a bad crowd. Instead of studying for college entrance exams, she disobeys her mother and tries to make it as a professional model. It’s difficult to blame her, since her new friends seem to be so much fun. Although they have their share of relationship problems, family troubles, and so on, they demonstrate an absolute devotion to their chosen craft: dress-making. Ultimately the show is about making decisions (work, family, and, yes, romantic decisions).

Someone is not only willing, but happy to listen to Bou-san's troubles.

Another week with me falling behind. Here I try to keep up, by writing about Shiki episode 6, Occult Academy (Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin) episode 7, and Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakamatachi episode 7. Before we get down to it, you might want to know that the mysterious driver of the cart has produced a chart revealing anime expected in Fall 2010. Take a look now, and start wondering about shows you won’t be able to watch for months.
