Summer 2011 update – Mawaru Penguindrum

I previously posted my picks for the upcoming season, didn’t mention Mawaru Penguindrum, which has some interesting things going for it. The reason I didn’t point it out was that there is very little info available about the story or even the genre. Despite this, I made a mental note to check out the first episode because it has some cool creative talent involved, from production company Brains Base, to writer Kunihiko Ikuhara (I happen to be a fan of Revolutionary Girl Utena), to the character designer of Otome Youkai Zakuro, Lily Hoshino. Despite this impressive crew, the early previews (1, 2, 3, 4) were completely opaque to me, revealing nothing. Then this happened:
Honestly, I still have no idea what this anime will be about, but I’m looking forward to finding out now more than ever.

It certainly has the best looking wig I’ve ever seen on a penguin.

I haven’t seen Utena so I don’t know what Ikuhara will bring to the table, but I’ve been looking forward to this series because whatever it actually is, it’s probably going to get pretty crazy. This video did nothing to discourage that theory.

Utena was “revolutionary”, but I doubt it would be a good guide, except in retrospect. The themes and so forth were well handled there, and I doubt Ikuhara has a need to re-articulate them.

I think this is going to be a surprise to everybody, which is great. I’m looking forward to being surprised by something this Summer.
