Durarara 17 – love triangle

May 8, 2010

Anri's tragic past is revealed.

Episode 17 of Durarara!! includes the epic fight against the Slashers, revelations about the manipulations behind some of the events previously seen, and the beginnings of the battle royale that will undoubtedly form the core of the final episodes in this excellent series.

As expected, Shizuo Heiwajima opens a can of whoop ass in the Ikebukuro park. The fight is nicely handled to combine elements of intensity and comedy. Celty, witnessing Shizuo in action, remarks on how cool he looks, but of course everyone knows by now that she secretly has a thing for him. Shizuo seems to have a good time fighting as much as he wants, but he doesn’t really want to kill anybody, so the solution to this mess needs to come from Anri, who is fighting for control of the legion of zombies.

Anri finally looks happy.

After its all over, Mikado goes to see Anri in the hospital, but his jealousy gets in the way of his ability to enjoy Anri’s cute smile. He wants to punish the Slasher(s) for attacking Anri, and so mobilizes his troops, without realizing that the opposing side is led by the girl he loves.

Yellow is his color after all.

Meanwhile Masaomi Kida is making a similar mistake. Thinking that the Slashers are a rival gang, or possibly an extension of the Dollars, Kida rejoins the Yellow Scarves as their general, with the goal of making Ikebukuro safe for Anri and Mikado. Little does he know that the two other sides he has just declared war on are led by his two best friends. Who could be responsible for sowing such dissent? Who could profit from the chaos? Yeah.

This episode was epitome of epicness. All protagonists identified, I can’t wait to see what happens with the trio, especially the back-story of Masoami.

LOL @ Mikado, he was too jealous of his competition to see Anri smiling genuinely. It’s interesting to see that the three of them are ready to do anything making ‘Bukro a safe place for each other. Oh how they are playing into the hands of Izaya but I hope they would soon come to their senses, Anri being the first one as she knows Izaya is behind this.

  2. Joojoobees Says:

It is interesting that Anri has the most information of the three, because she is unlikely to divulge it (difficult to explain that she learned the name by eating someone else’s memories).

Somehow I don’t see them “coming to their senses” soon, especially not with Izaya stirring the pot.

Damn now I got to choose a side Dollars,Yellow scarfs or Saika zombies, going with Zombies on this one mostly due to the cute leader.

Kind of figured Kiba was a leader of a gang how he avoided them all the time, can’t wait to see Kiba’s face when he finds out Anri and Mikado are the other leaders, probably be one of those “oh snap” moments.

If I had to pick, I would probably go Yellow Scarf because they seem the most organized. Plus they have a shogun, that has to count for something in a battle.

  4. Bass Says:

This was a great episode. Who would’ve thought that these three kids hold the key to such powerful organizations. And the best thing is, they don’t even know what the other has.

I hope this is gonna turn out epic in the end, something similar to how Suzaku and Lelouch finally did battle without knowing the other’s hidden agendas in Code Geass.

Also, with the addition of Simon, Shinra, Izaya, Celty and co. the possibilities of how this will turn out is pretty much endless

    • Joojoobees Says:

Yeah, it’s looking pretty good. The set up almost reminds me of Shakespeare in that they are all aiming at each other out of ignorance, whereas if they knew the truth they would never find.

  5. Kabitzin Says:

I was surprised that Anri was so upbeat, but I guess maybe she’s feeling all the love from her minions now. If she takes over any more Slashers, she’s going to be positively genki by the end of this show!

It’s gonna be real awkward when Selty comes in to find Shinra stripping Haruna… all in the name of science!

    • Joojoobees Says:

Re: Anri. She’s a real mystery. What happens the next time she meets the ganguro bullies? Does she make them give her their lunch money?

Re: Shinra “operating” on Haruna. I’m not even sure what he could possibly do for her. I’m sure he’ll try a dissection as part of it, though.
